THESIS PROJECT, BACHELOR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN 2015.
"Say what, you're going back to school Mike?"
"Sure am, just had a goood long break ;)."
I know some of you are squinting your eyes, thinking -"What?? He didn't graduate back in the days?" or "Why go back to univerisity now?".
Yes, I left school without finishing my thesis about 8 years ago, for a number of reasons, and I can honestly say that I didn't think this day would come. Being a freelancer has suited me very well and I have truly enjoyed it. It is a great challenge and adventure.
But then certain events played out in a certain order and some opportunities arose that felt to good to miss out on. Again, I didn't think that I would go back to university - ever. But I gotta live what I preach, and this door opened in such a way that I would have been foolish not to enter.
That's a short and compressed background story.
Now it is time to dig into the world of MSO & SAR which stands for Managing Search Operations & Search And Rescue. MSO is a worldwide technique that the police uses when searching for lost people. Swedish police are a prominent authority in this field and has made a lot of work to develop and improve this method. I have the privilege of working with two of the best officers in this field, Joacim Lundqvist and Örjan Ovesson, at Umeå Police Department. So cool!
The first few weeks will be about learning, discovering and understanding all about this problem (?). Through information and data gathering, statistics, interviews, need analysis, activity flow charts and observations I hope to learn enough to start an healthy ideation and koncept process. A design specification will be my benchmark for all that needs to be covered. And on it goes.
This page will be a "Behind the Project" blog, where I will share as much of my process as possible. Everything from research methodogy to ideation and mockup building will fill this page the next 10 weeks. I have a good deal with my sponsors, so this will be a very transparent project where I would love your feedback, insight and suggestions. Anything to make it as good as possible.
Good music is essential to a good project, so I've put together a public playlist on Spotify that you find HERE.
